Nehemiah 1:1-2:20

There was a man named Nehemiah, a God honoring Jew.
He was a cup bearer to Artaxerxes, and he didn't know what to do.

He heard how Jerusalem was broken down, and all the gates were burned.
His face showed just how sad he was, from all that he had learned.

As he gave the king his wine, the king asked what was wrong.
You are not hurt or sick, but I see your face is long.

Oh dear, thought Nehemiah. Afraid the king could see.
If he's not happy with my job, what will become of me?

But the king did ask Nehemiah. Did God want it this way?
Should I tell the king of Israel's fate? Nehemiah stopped to pray.

The house of God was being built, but the city had no wall.
If I ask the king if I can help, will he even hear my call?

So Nehemiah asked the king if he could go away,
To help rebuild Jerusalem. Would the king say he must stay?

How long will you be gone? This request, it pleased the king.
He gave Nehemiah letters, and provided everything.

He sent soldiers for protection. Captains with their men.
The whole company made their journey, back to Jerusalem.

Their enemies round about, tried to fill them with despair.
You think you'll rebuild this broken wall? You haven't got a prayer.
